The Outlaw Demon Wails, by Kim Harrison
The book opens with a bang. Unfortunately, it proceeds with a whimper and segues into a gigantic ocean of angst that persists for half the book, maybe more. At one point, I set the book down on my laptop while I made a sandwich, and I'm lucky that angst doesn't short out electrical circuits, because it had left a great big puddle when I got back.
I suggest skimming the first half of the book to pick up the pertinent plot points and clues and developments. There are several developments that happened offscreen since the last book, and some of them are mildly important to this one, and all of them are important as setup for the next few. The real meat of the book, though, is the second half.
The second half of the book is basically the classic cascade of things going wrong after things go wrong on top of things going wrong. I am slightly annoyed that I'm apparently never going to get hot Rachel/Ivy luvluv, but at least that whole arc is mostly done with at this point.
More importantly, the end of the book confirms something I've suspected for a VERY long time, about Rachel, the demons, the elves, and Trent. Also, a total wtf out of nowhere wrt Rachel's father. There's apparently been one foreshadowing previously in the series, disguised as song lyrics. Oh well.
In conclusion: I'm actually not annoyed over not being surprised by this development. I'm not sure why I'm not. Also, MY BOYFRIEND IS DEAD.
